ethiopia ethiopia ethiopia Ark of the Covenant Itinerary ethiopia ethiopia ethiopia

July 11 Depart from Washington’s Dulles Airport this evening.

July 12

Arrive Addis Ababa and transfer to the beautiful Sheraton Hotel.

July 13

After breakfast we fly to Axum.  The legends narrated in the Kebre Nagast (“Book of Kings”) recount how the city of Axum as early as the 10th century B.C. was already the city in which the Queen of Sheba resided.  We visit the ruins of Queen of Sheba’s Palace and exotic tombs of former kings, an ancient hilltop church, plus a mysterious lion’s head dating back to the Knights Templar.  In addition we visit the version of the “Rosetta Stone” of the Axumite Kingdom and visit some newly-uncovered archeological sites and recently-opened tombs.  We will have an opportunity to visit with the administrator of St. Mary’s to discuss the Ark of the Covenant and the significance of its keeping it safe and see the crowns of Ethiopian Kings and other treasures.  Enjoy the view, as we have teachings and fellowship overlooking Stele Square (site of the pre-Christian engraved, granite monoliths).

July 14

Early morning we participate in the “Mihila,” a special gathering for prayers around St. Mary of Zion.   We will see the masses of people all wearing white gauze clothing and clustered on the hills overlooking the pool of Sheba – at the head of the ceremonial grounds.  The morning music will be heard early as we enjoy the sites and sounds over breakfast.   Then it is down the mountain to join in the festivities!  This afternoon we spend time at the open air market and then a visit to Bob’s favorite orphanage.

July 15

Off to Lalibela, the “New Jerusalem.” We’ll visit the amazing underground monolithic churches, which were hewn completely out of pink granite rock in the 12th century, and considered one of the wonders of the world.  The Ethiopians believe that they play a part in the second coming of our Lord.  On our way to Lalibela, weather and time permitting, we will fly over the amazing Danankil depression.  Once at our hotel, you will have amazing views of the great rift.  This brand-new boutique hotel has the most commanding views in all of Ethiopia.  It sits high on a cliff with views of unique geological attributes coupled with dots of small villages interspersed for a hundred miles.

July 16

Lalibela  Visit a unique village this morning and spend time learning about their way of life.  This afternoon we fly to Gondor, the first capital city of the Ethiopian empire.  There are a dozen castles built by various emperors over the course of 236 years.  The city seems more European than African and also has Islamic influences.  In the afternoon, we visit the palaces, residences and baths of Fasilidas.  We will visit the church of Debre Berham Selassie (Light of the Trinity), which is located at the summit of a hill and surrounded by fortified walls.  The interior is decorated with beautiful frescos.  Our hotel has a splendid panoramic garden.  Gonder was once the home of the highly publicized Falasha’s.  The Falasha’s was one of the Tribes of Israel that were moved to Israel in the last 2 decades.

July 17

Today we leave Lalibela for Bahir Dar.  On the way this afternoon, we visit the thundering Blue Nile Falls, which is locally known as Tissat Falls—100 meters wide, the water plunges for 45 meters and gives trise to steam clouds and rainbows.  We’ll cross the Blue Nile in papyrus boats.  Those who wish can take a natural shower or swim.  We will sit and enjoy a light picnic in this isolated scenic place.  Overnight at Tana Hotel.

July 18

Bahir Dar Today we visit several islands on Lake Tana, including Tana Kirkos – the island that held the Ark of the Covenant for many years.  Although women are not allowed to see the altar where the tabernacle sat, we have made special arrangements with the monks to have artifacts from the monastery and brought out for viewing.  We’ll also be visiting the islands where Nargo Silassie and Ura Kidane Mihret Monastaries are located.

July 19

Visit the basket and wood markets this morning and then off to Addis Ababa.  We take in a city tour of Addis, visiting the National Museum, known to be the best museum in Africa, where cultural and archeological relics, including a plaster cast of “Lucy,” the 3.2 skeleton of the “Hominid” is on display.  Late today we head to the airport and depart for home or Cairo for the extension, where both groups arrive early on July 20th.

And the second part of this wondrous journey - July 19-29, 2009
The Exodus:  Retracing the Footsteps of Moses

Egypt, the Nile and its Ancient, Mysterious Wonders

We will spend time retracing the footsteps of Moses and the Israelites in the wilderness, stay on the Nile to visit the ancient tombs and temples -- perhaps the very spot where Pharaoh’s daughter drew the baby Moses from the water and visit the Mummy Room where there are strong chances you will be face to face with the same Pharaoh that Moses spoke to at the time of the Exodus.  Join us for a great time of teaching and fellowship!  Here are just a few of the exciting highlights:

  • View the blackened mountain top, Jabal al Lawz as outlined in Exodus 19:18

  • Day trip on the Red Sea to view the site of the parting of the sea

  • Giza Plateau with its amazing Great Pyramids and the Sphinx

  • Visit the Royal Valley of the Kings and the Royal Valley of the Queens

  • Egyptian Museum with our own Egyptologists and exclusive visit to the Mummy Room

  • Visit the Land of Goshen, the start of the Exodus

  • Numerous teachings and opportunities for fellowship

Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Jeremiah and Jesus were there…..now you can be there too!

The Exodus: Retracing the Footsteps of Moses

July 20 After arrival in Cairo this morning, we rest at the famous Mena House - overlooking the Pyramids.  After a rest this morning we visit the Egyptian Museum for a teaching and visit the Egyptian Museum.   The actual name of Pharaoh of the Exodus is not recorded in the Bible.  It may actually be possible to see the man (mummy) that Moses spoke to during the time of the Exodus.  Bob uncovers the mysteries of this museum - especially how it identifies the accuracy of the Bible once comparing it to the Egyptian writings in the museum.  This afternoon we visit the Pyramids at Giza.  It is amazing to think that these Pyramids were well known to Jacob, Moses and Aaron at the time of the Exodus and were probably seen by Jesus himself.
July 21 Cairo Off to Sakkara!  This fascinating place is where they recently discovered that large mounds that they thought were hills were found to be Joseph's storehouses!  Also out in this area is the Ancient Capital of Egypt - Memphis and the oldest of the pyramids called the Step Pyramid.

July 22

Cairo Today we visit the City of the Dead where we will meet an American young man who operates a children's ministry out the the dumps of Cairo.  We also visit the colorful Khan Bazaar where we can purchase frankincense, myhrr.  Off this afternoon to fly to Luxor.   Our hotel is precious and sits on the quiet side of the Nile in view of the commanding temple.

July 23

Luxor Full day visit of the West Bank of the Nile.  We will visit the Valley of the Kings, Queens and Nobles including the tomb of child Pharaoh Tutankamen.  This afternoon we also visit the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memmon.  We visit an island in the middle of the Nile this evening for a special teaching on the time that God's people spent on the Nile.

July 24

Luxor Today we visit the Temples of Karnak and Luxor with our Egyptologist.  We will study the writings in tandem with The Word of God.  Later today we travel out in the desert to see El Kab.  This ancient cemetary was discovered in 2000 by Belgian archeologists.    Return to our little oasis for the night.

July 25

Sinai Peninsula This morning we fly to Sharm el Sheik.  We are met and transferred to the view point of the probable crossing of the Israelites.  We continue on to our hotel on the Red Sea.  Time to enjoy the pool and access to the sea.

July 26

Sinai Peninsula Load up this morning in 4WD vehicles and head out into the desert.  We will stop along the way for sightings of Mennorah's sketched into rocks along the way.  Our destination is a mountain top overlook onto Jabal-al-Lawz.  Click here for Bob's research site.   We will spend the afternoon at a Bedouin Camp for a barbeque lunch.  Enjoy the children and ladies selling their hand made wares.  They don't receive a lot of tourists out here so it is special for them and us!

July 27

Sinai Peninsula Today you can take an optional tour to the traditional site of St. Catherine's Monastery.  If you choose to stay at the hotel you could enjoy some spa services or shopping.

July 28

Land of Goshen Today will be a full day of traversing the Sinai over the famous Suez Canal and then into the Land of Goshen to retrace the footsteps of Joseph.  We arrive in Cairo late this evening.  We celebrate tonight what God has shown us about this land and its importance to our faith.

July 29

Home After breakfast we fly back to New York.

This trip is a must for those seeking soft adventure.  The hotel in Addis is 5-star and everywhere else in Ethiopia is 3-star, but we enjoy the very best  that the country has to offer.  Singles are very welcome and we match room-mates.   If you enjoy photography, birding and especially being a part of new and exciting archeological digs and new discoveries, you have found the trip-of-a-life time!  The cradle of history is here!

Join Bob, Rhonda Sand and the crew as we retrace the trips taken by National Geographic, the History Channel, and, of course, our own Bible-based discoverer, Bob.
